Bunion Symptoms and Surgical Treatment

A bunion is a common foot deformity that develops when the big toe shifts toward the smaller toes. This creates a noticeable bump along the inside of the foot near the big toe joint. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, and difficulty wearing shoes. Some people also develop corns or calluses from pressure. Risk factors include family history, inherited foot structure, and wearing tight footwear. Bunions can progress slowly, making early attention helpful for comfort.

A podiatrist will examine your foot and ask about symptoms, activity, and medical history. X-rays may help evaluate bone alignment and joint changes. Treatment often begins with conservative care. Wearing wider shoes or orthotics may reduce irritation, and stretching may improve flexibility. Bunion surgery may be considered when pain continues despite treatment, walking becomes difficult, or the deformity interferes with daily activities. The decision is largely based on symptoms and function rather than appearance alone.

Bunion surgery aims to improve alignment and relieve pressure surrounding the affected joint. The procedure depends on the bunion’s severity and foot structure. A podiatrist may realign the bone, correct joint positioning, or adjust surrounding tissues. After surgery, you may need a protective shoe, elevation, and medication. Follow-up visits help the podiatrist monitor healing and increase activity. Following post-operative instructions carefully can help promote smoother healing.

Consistent bunion pain can affect walking, work, and comfort. Surgery is not necessary for every bunion, but it can provide relief when symptoms persist and conservative care has not worked. An evaluation can clarify whether surgery is appropriate and which procedure may fit your needs. If you have a bunion and are considering foot surgery for relief, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can discuss the benefits of this procedure with you.

Foot surgery is sometimes necessary to treat a foot ailment. To learn more, contact one of our podiatrists of Family Foot & Ankle Centers. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

When Is Surgery Necessary?

Foot and ankle surgery is generally reserved for cases in which less invasive, conservative procedures have failed to alleviate the problem. Some of the cases in which surgery may be necessary include:

  • Removing foot deformities like bunions and bone spurs
  • Severe arthritis that has caused bone issues
  • Cosmetic reconstruction

What Types of Surgery Are There?

The type of surgery you receive will depend on the nature of the problem you have. Some of the possible surgeries include:

  • Bunionectomy for painful bunions
  • Surgical fusion for realignment of bones
  • Neuropathy decompression surgery to treat nerve damage

Benefits of Surgery

Although surgery is usually a last resort, it can provide more complete pain relief compared to non-surgical methods and may allow you to finally resume full activity.

Surgical techniques have also become increasingly sophisticated. Techniques like endoscopic surgery allow for smaller incisions and faster recovery times.

Dr. Jeffrey Petty

Absolutely life saving! My husband had been dealing with pain in a pinky toe for months going to another podiatrist. Things continued to turn for the worst. After landing in front of Dr. Petty, he immediately pointed out a possibility of vascular issues. Within a few hours, my husband was directed to a specialist (cardiologist/vascular dr). Next thing you know, my husband landed at Big Baylor in Dallas having a surgery to remove a blocked artery to his leg that became life threatening at 41 yrs old & a healthy man. If it wasn’t for Dr. Petty, my husband would have not made it another day! We have seen doctor petty for over 20 years! He’s very respectful, helpful and truly caring! Not just that, but his staff is so supportive and friendly! Highly recommended! Hands down!
